To be honest, I think the new Spanish PM and ETA worked out a deal before he was even elected, for them to declare a cease-fire, but the Madrid bombings pushed it back a ways, so that neither ETA nor the PM looked weak.
Just glad it happened.
Oh, and here's some freedom-talking for your asses!

Re: WE GOTS PEACE!!!
Thu, March 23, 2006 - 3:25 PMyeah, I couldn't believe it when I heard about it! We'll see how long it lasts--I hate to be a pessimist, but they've said this before, as has Ireland's IRA. It never seems to work. If it does work, it may usher in a new era. -

Re: WE GOTS PEACE!!!
Fri, March 24, 2006 - 7:30 PMI am pleased about the development, too.
Without pretending to have any expertise in this area, can I ask if people in this tribe think that the ultimate resolution of the Basque political situation in Spain (which I suppose means no more violence) would require a changed identity of their country to be accepted by all Spaniards? That is, must Spaniards of all kinds grow to see Spain as a collection of cooperating cultures, married together by geography and history? The people of Belgium and Switzerland seem to have created sucessful multi-ethnic countries.
On the other side, provided that an ethnic group's culture, language and traditions are protected, then being in a bigger grouping has lots of obvious advantages.
I am a new member to this tribe. My interest is cutural: I am curious because my grandmother, who was from South America, was partly of Basque ancestry (her father's surname was Saenz de Viteri).
