Basque Women, I think...

The only thing that'd satisfy me! Any of you brothers and sisters ever date a person from your gene-pool? All these so-called Caucasians that I've dated just don't have enough of that Cro-Magnon gene I'm dreaming of...

Show me a Basque couple so I can sleep at night.

It is very strange, but I never met any Basque men my age! And it's not like I didn't socialize--I just never met any. And if I did I didn't know it, because you can't always tell someone is basque.

    Anyone else?

Speaking of Basque women, I just read a book called Lieutenant Nun: Memoir of a Transvestite Basque in the New World by Catalina de Erauso. An amazing true story from the 17th century.

And news of a modern Basque woman comes from a good web site for Basque news in English. www.gara.net/english/wee...rt135056.php

In the first quarter-final session for the national bertsolari Grand Championship, at Lekunberri (Navarre) last Sunday, it was Amaia Agirre who won the day against her five opponents and now moves on to the semi-final stage.

      LEKUNBERRI
Bertsolaritza, not a uniquely Basque folk activity yet a highly traditional one across Euskal Herria, has been described by a former grand champion as the Basques' 'sport of words'.

No, it is not a debate club, nor is it a spelling competition: it consists of singing verses (bertsoak) to pre-established tunes (based, for example, on well-known Basque popular melodies), but with words improvised on the spot.

As in any sport, there are rules to make it truly competitive. Strict rhythm and rhyme patterns must be followed, for example: a syllable too many or a bad rhyme will lose you points. But that's the easiest part: for professionals, it's all about what you say (or rather sing) and how cleverly you express it.

In the past, a good bertsolari (verse singer) was invited, for instance, to village weddings, with instructions to poke light fun at the newlyweds and their families in their verses (better than boring speeches). And in the rural cider houses you could usually count on a good session of boisterous verse fun around a sturdy wooden table from equally sturdy middle-aged farmers after a good supper.

They didn't have championships then, they just did it for fun. Now it's all different. Kids learn the rules of bertsolaritza at Basque schools, and the best start to compete from their teens. Once largely a men's reserve, verse singing is today becoming equally popular among women. There are even formal contests with professional judges, and national championships.

But one of the most popular modalities in competitions is what is called the prison, where all the bertsolaris except for the one on stage are shut away out of hearing range until it is their turn, one by one, to emerge in front of the audience, where each is asked to sing on the same subject.

On this occasion the subject given was: 'You get on the bus at the station and take a seat at the back. As your jouney begins, you are looking out through the back window...'

The next semi-finals are on Saturday, October 15, at Idiazabal (Gipuzkoa), when it will be the turn of six more bertsolaris to delight the audience with their talent and quickness of wit, while vying to enter the semi-finals and compete against Amaia Agirre.

I learned at a party last night from a woman whose boyfriend was Basque that there is one way to tell a Basque.
We all seem to have a small bump at the back base of the skull. I had noticed mine but I thought it common...apparently it's only Basque who have this.
      Odd but true

I agree with Maria...I have never met a Basque man that I wasn't related to, and unfortunately, the ones that I am related to don't care that they are Basque...or I'd introuduce you to one, Maria ;)

wow.. i'm not alone because i am. if that makes any sense. as i think i have mentioned before... i have yet to knowingly meet any Basque at all outside of France. and if i did this person would have to be a female... then they would have to be my age.. then single.. and also, of course, we would have to get along. meeting a Basque girl, to me, is out of the question it seems. ~sigh~

Yes. Bai. I had the honor to be on your show, Benoit.

This is what I saw. You and your brilliant co-host speaking with callers, emailers and different guests of all ages, using four languages with great community spirit. It was a mix of history, an update from an expanding Ikastola and an interview with a charismatic couple embarking on a trip to South America to research and publish a reference on international Basque resources. Plus there was the beautiful brunette woman next to me. I am sorry I am not able to remember their names. A moment that touched me deeply came after you signed off, and the engineer was playing a classic Basque song. All of the Basques in the tiny room starting singing, beautifully, looking into each others eyes, smiling. It is on tape. It will take me more time to figure out how to send it online. I hope more Basque tribefolks will listen to the Basque culture spider on his monthly radio show via internet.

I have returned home to the windy Colorado plains from Europe, thinner and wiser. I look forward to returning to Euskal Herria. It was really fun to try my miniscule Euskara. The Basque were so delighted to hear me speak it. But, the French sure got annoyed when I mixed up Basque with French. Anyway, I am looking for a barnetegi too. Any recommendations?

            Agur eta besarkada handi

For the barnetegi, i'm going to search the information now, and, if i find, i'm going to give you the information the 5 of february... the next radio show... :)
the brunette girl who is speaking with me is "Nerea" < her firstname... it means "mine" 'possession).
              the second, is Noel Elorga.

The last time, when you were with us, you have taken some pictures... could you send some of them by e-mail ?

              milesker eta urte berri on
thank you and happy new year.

I meet some Basque people every so often here (Northen California) and truth is I always have the feeling they are before hand...
Honestly there is some kind of "honesty" or "truth" about Basque people, even some that have been living here their whole life...
Well, of course they can always tell I am for one not American (French native here) and possibly Basque as well (half).
Yet, I do not feel that "bump" at the bottom of my skull... ;((((
But trust me, I have enough energy and all those crazy traits of a Basque person to prove it...oh yes...
                Look out...
I guess I am myself as well, hopefully...
But no I have never dated any Basque single men especially...
Actually that'd be too fiery for me, I need someone cool, laid-back, I am the fiery one, no need for more or we'd burn to ashes...;))
                S.
