Hello,
My name is John and I live in Nevada.
I am half Basque from my mothers side of the family. My grandmothers name is Elizabeth Etcheverry. My great grandfather Peter Paul Etcheverry came from Bigorri in 1912 to Ely Nevada.. My great grandmothers name was Bernadine Goyhenetche and she was from Banca, both from the french side of the Basque Country.
I have never been to the Basque Country, but my mother has been over there several times ot see our relatives. I can understand some spanish basque, but can't speak it all that well. My step father and uncles all are from the Spanish side of the basque country near mungia, and I grew up listening to them speak Basque.
Many of my relatives are still fluent in Basque, but the grandchildren seemed to slip through the cracks and only spoke the language when we were younger.
I see that Benoit has the last name of Etcheverry, and I am wondering if we could possibly be 2nd or 3rd cousins.

Tue, August 28, 2007 - 11:15 PMhi john,
thank you for your participation. About our name, you must know that Etcheverry is one of the most popular name in the basque country (etcheverry is written in french, in the spanish side is etxeberri, so if you read somewhere Etcheverry you can be sure that he is from Iparralde.
Yes Etcheverry in the french side of the basque country, is like... Smith in the USA.... but i know some etcheverry from baigorry, from germiet exactly, it's a "block" of Baigorry. If you look at Etcheverry in the page ; www.orange.fr and inside : annuaire, you put the name Etcheverry, and for the zip, you put 64 (région)... you will have all the list of the Etcheverry... to read it... i hope you have a long week... ;)
if you are searching for other informations, i have an other page on myspace, with more pictures, more vodeo etc... www.myspace.com/etcheverrybenoit .
Nice to meet you john. -

Re: New to tribe
Thu, August 30, 2007 - 9:11 AMI had heard that Etcheverry was a widely used name on the French side of the Basque Country. Some of my relatives just came over from the Basque Country for a family reunion. My cousins run Etcheverry Basque Imports and live in San Francisco. I figured since you had the last name, I might as well ask you about it.
Thanks for the clarification, I will check out your my space page. Very nice to meet you
