    Hello William,

I am in New York (Long Island) which may not all that close, but I would be interested finding out and/or taking part in your new Basque Club. I do not speak Basque, but I am very interested in Basque culture and proud of my heritage. I have done a fair amount of research through personal interest, and I am amazed how underappreciated the Basque contributions to the world and this country in particular have been.

    Regards,
    Frank

Recently I was thinking about the invisibility of the Basques in America. Recent western history research like the arborglyphs and new organizations like those in Boise are bringing more awareness about this large minority. While Western history acknowledges the bitter and violent battle between sheep ranchers and cattlemen, most of the sheep people were probably Basque. In S. Colorado rural plains where I now live, I have met a lady whose family were sheep herders here. They were desperately poor and not well accepted by the local cattle folks. Her whole family is gone with no sign of them ever having been here. It was a tough life for them. Her family's experience is another mini-diaspora.

I think that the Basque work ethic and their white skin allowed them to integrate within a generation. They disappeared into the American capitalist culture.

Good luck on organizing. gero arte Txiki Txakurreme
