Re: "Pearls of Wisdom"....Basque sayings.....
Mon, August 1, 2005 - 9:44 AMI heard that one basque saying was when things were going badly, a basque would say "Cobwebs," dismissively. Meaning: all that happens in life is like cobwebs, you just blow them away. Nice, if not a little cynical.
Sometimes when I'm stressing over something I mutter "cobwebs" to myself and smile. -

Mon, August 1, 2005 - 7:18 PMHere is a good one:
Egizu beti on, ez jakinarren non.
Do always the right thing, even if you don't know who benefits.

Re: "Pearls of Wisdom"....Basque sayings.....
Wed, August 3, 2005 - 7:57 AMAt Jaialdi 2005 I picked up "The Land of My Fathers, A Son's Return to the Basque Country" by Robert Laxalt from UNR Press. It is a charming memoir with many Basque old sayings.
If a person's reputation is maligned, it is never forgotten.
A Basque's obligation to duty is so strong that it is frightening.
When a Basque woman is mean, she is venomous and exudes it like a fishwife.
If you don't believe in a law, don't break it. Simply sidestep it.
Take three Basques who have agreed on a common goal. Two will work toward that goal. One will work against it out of principle. They hate unanimity.......and finally......
The Basques are not much for words. Theirs is a language of the eyes.
Jaialdi was GREAT! Check out Benoit's website gure8hz@yahoo.fr
